We’ve had another exciting and busy week in Year 1! Here’s a look at what we’ve been learning across the curriculum:

This week, the children have been practising their storytelling skills by innovating a familiar tale. We changed the characters to a king, queen, and a shy badger, and the children enjoyed using their imaginations to build a brand-new version of the story.

We focused on:

  • Using adjectives to describe the characters (e.g., brave king, kind queen, shy, stripy badger).
  • Choosing exciting verbs to show what the characters did (e.g., pulled and tugged).
  • Saying sentences out loud before writing them to help with structure and clarity.

Ask your child to retell their innovated story at home—they love performing them!

In Maths, we have been exploring position and order. Children have been practising how to use important positional vocabulary such as before, after and between. We used practical activities to help children describe where things are and to talk confidently about order. You could support this at home by using these words with toys, snacks, or steps in a routine.

Our Geography lessons have helped us learn about famous landmarks around the United Kingdom, such as Big Ben, Edinburgh Castle, and the Giant’s Causeway. We also learned about personal landmarks—places that are special or meaningful to us, like our school, a favourite park, a relative’s house, or a sports club. The children have loved sharing their own personal landmarks with the class.

In Science, we have been learning about how animals eat different types of food. We explored the three main groups: Carnivores – animals that eat meat, Herbivores – animals that eat plants and Omnivores – animals that eat both plants and meat. The children sorted animals into these categories and discussed what makes diets different.

Thank you for your continued support. We are so proud of how hard the children are working and how curious they are about the world around them!

We’ve had a fun and thoughtful week in Year 1!

The children became poets, using their five senses to describe the world around them. They thought carefully about how our senses help us understand and enjoy our surroundings. In Maths, we’ve been using numbers to 10 and practising counting on with a number line. The children are learning to make careful jumps to find the total. You can help at home by practising counting on in everyday activities!

In Geography we explored our local area and noticed how some features are grouped, such as shops near bus stops and green spaces away from main roads. We completed a checklist to identify human and physical features. In Science, we identified the main parts of a fish and discussed how gills, fins, scales, and tails help them to survive in water.

What a great week of learning!

We’ve had a busy and exciting week in Year 1! Here’s what we’ve been learning:

In English we have been writing instructions for planting a seed, using imperative (bossy) verbs like get, fill, plant, and water. We also worked on neat handwriting and making sure our letters sit on the line.

It’s been another exciting week in science, we explored the features of birds — feathers, wings, beaks, and claws — and learned how each part helps them survive.

In our Geography lesson we identified key features of our school and practised describing places using words like next to, behind and in front of. We then used a map of our school to locate the year 1 classroom, the hall, reception, and the playground.

In Maths, we’ve been using a number line to count on and solve addition problems. The children are becoming confident with jumping along the line to find the total.

In RE, we’ve been learning about how people believe the world was created and sharing our own ideas respectfully.

03.10.25

This week in Year 1, we have been very busy with lots of exciting learning! In maths, the children have been practising their number bonds to 10 using the part–part–whole model, which is helping them to see how numbers can be broken apart and put back together. In English, the children have started writing their very own four-part stories. They are working hard to include interesting adjectives and remembering to use capital letters and full stops. In science, we enjoyed a sensory practical lesson where the children explored the world around them through sight, touch, smell, taste, and hearing. Finally, in religious education, the children learned about the characteristics of a creator and discussed how different beliefs explain the world. We are so proud of all the children’s enthusiasm and effort this week!

12.09.25

We have had a wonderful start to the new academic year. In English, the children have been revisiting capital letters, full stops, and spaces between words. They have already written their very first four-part story and have shown great enthusiasm in their writing. In Maths, we have been working with numbers up to 10, using a range of resources to represent them. The children have also started learning to write numbers in both digit and word form.

Our Geography topic this term is 'Where We Live.' The children enjoyed creating their first map of the local area and exploring its key features. In Science, we have been learning about living and non-living things, sorting different objects into these two groups.

In PSHE, our focus this term is on emotions. We have already begun using the Zones of Regulation, which help the children identify how they are feeling and explain the reasons behind their emotions.
