The Hedgehogs and Squirrels started this week with a fabulous trip to the farm. The children were a credit to the school and had a wonderful time meeting all of the farm animals, riding on the tractor and feeding the lambs.

In English we have been reflecting on our trip, recounting our day and writing about our favourite animals as well as retelling the story of "What the Ladybird Heard."

In Maths we have continued to look at number bonds to 10, finding two and even three different ways to make 10. We have begun to look at doubles and we will continue this learning next week.

In Understanding the World we have been exploring the farm, farm animals and we have begun to look at minibeast and butterflies.

We have been creating beautiful images of butterflies in Expressive Art and Design as well as learning all about our Artist of the month Henri Matisse. We made tissue paper collages and paper cut out pictures after his style.

This week in Literacy we have begun to look at the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. We have retold the story together, made a beanstalk for the small world area and made 'window beans' by planting our beans in plastic bags that we have then attached to the classroom window so that we can watch our beans grow.

In Maths we have looked at the composition of numbers to 5 and introduced the idea of two parts making a whole.

In understanding the world, our focus this week has been Religious Education. We have been learning about why church is a special place for Christians and discussing special places to us.

In PSED, we have been looking at the feeling: sad. We have been looking at what kind of things make us sad and what strategies we could use to make us feel happier. The children came up with ideas such as: playing with their favourite toy, dancing or having a hug.

We continued our learning about the Three Billy Goats Gruff, creating new characters as we innovated our stories and recording our stories on new story maps.

In Maths we used 5 frames to help us look at one more and one less.

In PSED, we thought about feeling worried and how to recognise and cope with these feelings.

This week in FS2 we have carried on our learning journey about The Three Billy Goats Gruff. We have made our own story maps and performed them in small groups. We've had 'Troll Detectives' making wanted posters using adjectives to describe what the troll looks like and the Three Billy Goats Gruff puppet show in our environment. In maths, we have been looking at identifying 'zero' and 'not 0' using different visual representations. In our Understanding the World topic, we have been looking at Winter Birds. We have loved making bird feeders and putting them on the trees and bushes whilst on our Wellie Walk. We then have spent some time bird watching. Additionally, we have been looking at our protective hands and thinking about what adults we can talk to if we are feeling sad or worried at school. We now have a lovely display of these in both Squirrels and Hedgehog's classrooms.

20.12.24

This week the children in Squirrels and Hedgehogs have been learning about instructions. They followed a simple recipe to make Gingerbread Men and discussed the actions that they were doing at each stage. The children enjoyed mixing, rolling, cutting and putting the gingerbread men on a tray. After making gingerbread men the children recalled the different verbs and wrote them using 'fred talk say the word' to hear each of the sounds before writing the corresponding letter. What a fantastic way to end the term!

This week the children in Hedgehogs and Squirrels have been learning about Hedeghogs; what they look like, what they eat and where they live. They then used resources in the malleable area to make their own spiky hedgehog with a pointy snout.

In the creative area, the children have been exploring how to use masking tape. they discovered that masking tape can be used to keep areas of the page free from paint. The children really enjoyed peeling back the masking tape and observing the lines on their painting.

In our Talk for Writing lessons we have been creating story mountains with the main events of our story. We have been working really hard to use the story telling language 'Once upon a time, First, Then, Next and Finally.

22.11.24

The children in Foundation Stage 2 have been busy learning the story map for 'The Gingerbread Man'. The children can now confidently retell the story of the Gingebread man using actions. They have been developing their story telling voices and learning to change their tone of voice for different characters. Their weekly writing task has focused on recalling the characters from the story and writing a list of their names using 'Fred Talk' to hear the individual sounds in words before writing the corresponding letter. We have also been developing our understanding of Autumn and the changes that are happening outside as a result of the changing seasons. We collected leaves on our weekly Welly Walk to make leaf crowns and have also explored leaf printing.

15.11.24

It has been another busy week in the Hedgehogs and Squirrels class!

We started the week by learning about why people wear red poppies. We took time to observe and paint pictures of poppies using water colours. We applied lots of skills as we painted; holding a thinner brush using the tripod grip, using shorter strokes as we painted to add detail to our painting and then washing our brushes in water and wiping them with a paper towel to make sure they are clean.

On Wednesday it was a very exciting day at Spring Lane as the school celebrated its 150th birthday. To celebrate the boys and girls learnt a special song, made birthday cards, decorated ballons and coloured in birthday posters. We took time to discuss why birthdays are special and how we celebrate them.

This week we started to read our focus story 'The Gingerbread Man'. We couldn't believe it when the little old lady baked some ginger cookies for us to try. Unfortunately, as the fox ate most of the gingerbread man, we were only about to eat his circular head! As we ate the cookie we thought about how it smelt, what it looked like and how it tasted. Most of us thought it was very yummy! We then designed our own gingerbread man and labeled it's different body parts. We used 'Fred talk' to help us hear the sounds in the words before writing the letters.

18.10.24

This week FS2 have been learning all about their bodies and how to be healthy. We have labelled our facial features, and body parts. We had great fun drawing around our bodies and labelling them. We have developed our understanding of how our body feels when we are still and calm and when we are exercising our bodies, "my heart is beating so fast" "I have lots of energy".

We continue to learn our letter sounds and helping Fred to turn his sounds into words. In maths we have made loose parts patterns and recognised the numbers 1 and 2 in different ways.

11.10.24

This week the squirrels and hedgehogs have been taking part in learning about where each of us lives. we have been drawing our journeys to school and discussing where our homes are, the classes have shown great enthusiasm towards this topic and have really enjoyed being able to talk about themselves as well as listening to others. We have moved on in talk for writing to telling our own stories, this has shown the imaginative side in all of the pupils here in FS2. There has been some fantastic story telling not only this, but the pupils have also been acting out their stories on our stage area.

04.10.24

This week in FS2 we have been learning all about our emotions, how they make us feel and relating it to a colour e.g. calm=green. The children have learnt about the zones of regulation and how we can manage our feelings.

Watch this video to find out more about the zones of regulation.

It has been a very wet week which has meant some fantastic learning for the children outdoors, we enjoyed a Welly walk observing the changes in nature, jumping in muddy puddles and catching the rain drops in different containers.

In maths we have been learning when we have more, less or the same amount of objects, we have also learnt about size and weight of objects, weighing play dough and going on a teddy bears picnic with different sized bears. The children have continued to learn phonics sounds and explored different ways of mark making indoors and out. Fred has heard some fantastic blending this week!

We look forward to what the next week will bring.

27.09.24

In FS2, we have been exploring what makes us the same and different, leading on from this we have been diving deep into our families and discussing who is special to us. The children have really enjoyed telling their peers who is in their families and during our learning to play there has been many opportunities for these discussions to continue. We have also started our Talk for writing story ‘Rosie’s Walk’ where the pupils have been acting the story out. This has been very enjoyable to watch as the pupils are really getting involved and they are already showing how brilliant they are at story telling.

In Fs2 we have started our phonics lessons which the pupils are really taking a liking to and get very excited to hear and see our next sound. They will repeat our new sound throughout the day and have already started testing each other to see what sounds they can remember from previous lessons. It has been a very busy start to the year for the pupils, but they are taking every day in their stride. Well done!
