Design Technology

Intent

At Spring Lane we aim to offer a high-quality Design Technology education in line with the National Curriculum.

Half-termly topics for all children from Year 1 to Year 6 allow pupils to gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of how to design, build and evaluate a range of high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users. Children are taught how to critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others, allowing them to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world.

The Design Technology curriculum also provides children with the opportunity to develop their cooking skills through understanding and applying the principles of nutrition.

The progression document below shows the key knowledge and skills children are expected to have understood for each year group.

Implementation

Our Design Technology curriculum, while covering the National Curriculum, aims to excite the children and allow them to develop their own skills and knowledge.  

Design Technology is incorporated within other curriculum subjects such as Art, RE and the humanities.

This allows strong cross-curricular links to be made between subjects to ensure the children have many occasions where by they can apply their knowledge and understanding. Lessons will feature a hands on approach to learning with opportunities to use subject- specific resources ie. Tools, cooking utensils, photographs and measuring equipment. Trips will aim inspire our children to design products that suit a specific purpose.

Assessment

Assessment of DT is conducted by class teachers using children’s work from their books, Seesaw and Learning Journey. This assessment
