At Spring Lane, we aim to offer a high-quality scientific education in line with the National Curriculum.
Half-termly science weeks for all children from Year 1 to Year 6 allow pupils to gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of the world around them, including what it is made up of, how they are affected by it and the local and global impact of science. The science curriculum also engenders the excitement, creativity and critical thinking about the world that will equip young people to make their own way in it
The progression document below shows the key knowledge and skills children, are expected, to have understood for each year group.
Our Science curriculum, while covering the National Curriculum, aims to excite the children and allow them to develop their own skills as scientists.
The design and progression of our Science curriculum allows for strong cross-curricular links to be made, between subjects, to ensure the children have many occasions when they can apply their knowledge and understanding. Lessons will feature a hands on approach to learning with opportunities to use subject- specific resources i.e. cells, magnets, magnifying glasses and measuring equipment. Trips will aim to bring science alive for our young learners.
Assessment of science is conducted by class teachers using children’s work from; their books, Seesaw and their Learning Journeys. This assessment is regular and informs planning for future lessons.
